Dakota County District Court Minnesota is divided into 10 judicial districts. Dakota County is part of the First Judicial District, along with Carver, Goodhue, LeSueur, McLeod, Scott and Sibley counties. Dakota County district courts are operated from the Dakota County Judicial Center in Hastings.

The Metropolitan Council provides recommendations on achieving orderly and efficient regional growth, and direction and coordination for agencies that provide major transportation, regional parks and airport systems that serve the region. The Metropolitan Council also operates the region's bus system, serves as a housing and redevelopment agency, and provides direction in the areas of solid waste management, interceptor sewers and sewage treatment plants as well as housing, health care and public transportation.
